Becoming a Childcare Worker: 3 Things You Need to Know

Childcare workers are a crucial part of positive early childhood development (ECD). They care for children in the absence of parents, and fulfill a child’s basic needs, such as feeding, bathing and overseeing play, as well as helping them prepare for the real world as they grow up.

In the US, childcare professionals go through rigorous training and certification programs that enable them to develop expert skills that enable them to look after young children, infants, and toddlers. Whether the caregiver is employed in a private setting or is operating at a public level, they must be able to demonstrate a few essential skills.

Let’s take a look at them!

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

CPR training, with a focus on injuries and illnesses related to children, is a vital asset for caregivers. This is especially important for caregivers who work in environments with children who have physical health conditions and may require emergency care during school hours.

Children who are allergic to food or other environmental triggers may also need emergency CPR; caregivers with the right skills can prove to be the difference between life and death.

Apart from that, children can often unknowingly ingest materials or chemicals that may be toxic and poisonous, in which case, CPR can sustain their breathing till an ambulance arrives.

First Aid

A first aid kit isn’t just necessary in childcare programs and Montessori classrooms; parents should keep a well-stocked kit at home as well. Children in their formative years go through a variety of unintentional injuries as they learn, explore, and discover new things around them.

A caregiver who can administer first aid can prevent small injuries from becoming serious, controlling the bleeding and preventing the wound from becoming infected. Scraped elbows and knees are some of the most common injuries in children, and most of them can be effectively treated with a first aid kit and basic knowledge about sterilization, wound cleaning, and treatments for swelling.

Routine Activities

Caregivers, in some settings, are also responsible for the preparation of meals and snacks for children. A professional caregiver should be well-versed in organizing age-appropriate meals. Other things that every caregiver should know include:

  • Supervising and monitoring safety during playtime

  • Helping children learn and keep good hygiene

  • Organizing plays with children that help them develop socio-emotional, cognitive and intellectual skills

  • Keeping a record of every child’s sleep time, bathroom routine, overall progress and interests

  • Teaching children social skills and role-playing through creative activities
